Between Earth and Sky is a reflection upon the land and spirit of Bundanon, on the Shoalhaven River in NSW, Australia. It is part of an on-going series of works that seeks to discover hidden forms of ecology and connection between plants, people and their environment. The piece weaves together field recordings, granular manipulations and reimaginations from Bundanon's forested enclaves.

The central field-recording used in the piece is from a location at Bundanon shown to me by the Australian photographer Lynne Roberts-Goodwin. Lynne had discovered a fallen tree at Bundanon that somehow remained suspended, perfectly horizontal above the ground. It was surrounded by dense foliage and tall vertical trees all climbing to the sky. Life-cycles of growth and decay resonated clearly, but then there was this tree that somehow hovered between it all and always made me ponder things! At sunrise I would visit this location with my recorder and capture the incredible diversity of bird sounds...singing their songs of life across a huge range of frequencies from the trees. I also explored recording using contact mics and bio-sensors on the trees, plants and earth at this same location to capture micro sounds & bio-electrical data. This material was translated to control voltage and midi, and used to assist in manipulating certain sound parameters of the field-recording and composition such as spatialisation, timbre, duration, frequency and density of sound. A process giving direct agency or connection to location and its ecology upon the finished sound of the work.

The piece was first premiered in a large multi-speaker spatialised performance at the Bathway Theatre, London as part of the SOUND/IMAGE FESTIVAL in 2023.
